Studio Recording II
(for students who have completed Introduction to Audio & Studio Recording I)

Course Description:
Coursework to include assignments for out of class recording projects, opportunities to assist in several actual studio recording sessions, assistance in selecting a project and procuring the proper equipment. Student must pass final exam and present a recording demo project for critique to pass the course.
Class Syllabus:
1. Review and assessment of knowledge of general audio terms and audio devices.Pro tools refresher including a brief quiz. Overview of goals and types of projects due.
2. Studio operations. Setting up and operating recording sessions,
general guidelines. Setting up pro tools rigs for sessions. Studio
management. The jobs of engineering and producing defined. Control room and headphone monitoring systems.(1st Lab Project Assigned)
3. Microphone selection and placement. Advanced techniques using an array of different microphones and direct boxes on different sources.Configuring Digidesign interfaces for tracking. Implementing of signal flow.
4. Mastering:guest speaker Dave Harris of Studio B Mastering will
discus the art and science of mastering as well as the basics of
sound and how it is perceived by the ear. (1st Lab Project Due-Final Project Assigned)
5. Analog outboard gear. High end mic preamps, outboard compressors equalizers and their integration within different studio scenarios during tracking. (Live musicians recorded in class).
6. Mixing with plug ins: Selecting and using plug ins for in the box
digital mixing. The process of selecting,purchasing and authorizing plug ins.(Guest Instructor)
7. Mixing Part 2: Utilizing and understand effects and preparing final masters.Pro Tools quiz
8. Final project Due. Projects played and critiqued in class
